Silvia Beck is a visual artist based in Berlin.
In her projects, she creates fictional documentations in image and language. Her multimedia practice transforms the concepts playfully into site-specific configurations and arrangements.

With experimental curiosity and an intuitive feel for social change, Silvia Beck seeks a kind of contemporary witness and self-positioning in relation to the world and the “art world” in her artistic work.

From fictitious documentation, freely invented contexts or improvised role-playing – the newly created arrangements ambivalently and playfully combine subjective consciousness and perceptual experience on the one hand with external systems on the other (Parallel Systems).

The various projects and exhibitions follow long-term work cycles that are interlinked: For example, she focuses on the relationship between neuroscience and technology as well as surveillance and control. She is also interested in the connection between identity, media realities and global power structures. In doing so, she questions current codes of art and artistic role models.

As a founding member of the LSD Gallery on Potsdamer Strasse, she introduced the fictional artist Viola Kamp to the Berlin art scene in 2012.

Studies
Silvia Beck studied Fine Arts and Philosophy as well as German Linguistics and Literature at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz

Awards
She has received numerous grants and awards, including the Früh Art Prize Cologne. She was honored with the Advancement Award of Rhineland-Palatinate and got working grants and scholarships from Berlin Senate Administration for Culture and the Berlin Cultural Endowment Foundation. In 2015, she was artist-in-residence at Q21 International, MuseumsQuartier Vienna

Academic teaching
Silvia Beck lectured as a substitute professor at the Department of Fine Arts at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz and held a teaching position at the EFB in Berlin. In 2000, she was appointed to a professorship at the Department of Design at the Niederrhein University of Applied Sciences in Krefeld

Works for public space
In 1994, Silvia Beck designed an office floor of the Dresdner Bank in Frankfurt (Windmühlstraße) with a fictional poetic guidance system and in 1998 she realized “Echoblock”, a parcours for the Loreley Park St. Goarshausen with drawings carved in stone, accompanied by a narrative machine (in cooperation with Dirk Melzer landscape architects). In 2000, her design “e-motion – an electronic high-rise” in Berlin-Marzahn was awarded first prize in the art-in-architecture competition
